Scientists Reveal 13 Foods To Eat And Limit To Lead A Healthier Life

A recent study published in the journal Nature Food suggests that making healthier food choices could add up to 10 years to your life. The study, based on data from the UK Biobank, a massive biomedical database with information from over 467,000 people in the UK, used a model to predict the potential impact of lifestyle changes on lifespan. The key finding? Individuals in their forties who switched from an unhealthy diet to one linked with a longer life could potentially gain around 10 years. Women seemed to benefit slightly more, with an additional 10.8 years, compared to men who saw an increase of 10.4 years.

The study emphasises that the sooner you start making dietary improvements, the greater the impact on life expectancy. While adults in their 40s achieved the most significant gains, even those starting at 70 could see an increase, though about half of what the younger age group experiences.

Expert Diet Tips For A Healthier Life:

  • Researchers from the University of Bergen in Norway and the University of Glasgow in Scotland found that adopting a healthy diet correlates directly with life expectancy. Incorporating whole grains, nuts, and fruits into your diet was found to have the most substantial impact on increasing lifespan while cutting back on sugar-sweetened beverages and processed meat was closely linked to lower mortality rates.

  • The study outlined a longevity-associated dietary pattern that includes moderate intakes of whole grains, fruit, fish, and white meat, along with high intakes of milk and dairy, vegetables, nuts, and legumes. On the flip side, a low intake of eggs, red meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, refined grains, and processed meat was associated with increased life expectancy.

  • Reducing the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and processed meats while increasing whole grains and nuts in your diet were highlighted as the most effective strategies for improving life expectancy. The study also suggested that factors like body mass index and energy consumption could play a role in mediating or confounding the relationship between diet and life expectancy.

1. Whole Grains: Incorporating whole grains into your diet, such as brown rice and quinoa, provides essential nutrients and fibre, contributing to improved heart health and longevity.

2. Nuts: Packed with healthy fats and antioxidants, nuts like almonds and walnuts have been linked to lower mortality rates and are a tasty way to boost your well-being.

3. Fruits: Colorful and nutrient-rich fruits like berries and citrus fruits not only satisfy your sweet tooth but also offer a range of vitamins and antioxidants that support overall health.

4. Fish and White Meat: Opt for lean protein sources like fish and white meat, such as chicken, to support muscle health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Weight-Loss Drugs Under EU Scanner Amid Suicide Risk Claims

The European Union's drugs regulator has asked pharma companies including Novo Nordisk A/S and Eli Lilly & Co. for more information as it reviews the potential risk of suicidal thoughts associated with a new class of weight-loss medicines.

The European Medicines Agency started investigating the issue in July after reports of suicidal thoughts and self-harm from people who had been taking the anti-obesity drugs. The review is focused on so-called GLP-1 treatments, a class that includes Novo's Wegovy weight-loss shot as well as its diabetes medicine Ozempic. The drugs are among the hottest sellers in pharma.

In a statement Friday, the EMA's safety committee said it had reviewed all clinical trial evidence and published literature on the subject, adding: "While at this point no conclusion can be drawn on a causal association, there are several issues that still need to be clarified."

The committee has agreed further lists of questions to be addressed by the makers of these medicines and said it will discuss the topic again at its meeting in April.

Though their use for weight loss is comparatively recent, GLP-1 drugs have a more than 15-year history as treatments for diabetes. The EMA investigation also includes dulaglutide, the active ingredient in Lilly's diabetes medicine Trulicity, and AstraZeneca Plc's diabetes drug Byetta.

"Patient safety is Lilly's top priority," a spokesperson for the company told Bloomberg Friday. "We will continue to respond to the regulatory reviews regarding safety signals related to dulaglutide as part of our routine regulatory review processes."

Ruben Neves says he "wants to stay" at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and will not go on loan to Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old former Wolves captain joined the Riyadh club for £47m in June.

There has been speculation that Newcastle - who are also owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund - want to sign the Portugal international in January.

But when asked if it was possible, Neves told BBC Sport: "I don't go."

"I think that's rumours because of the owner of the clubs of course, and because I've played in England as well," he added.

"There was Newcastle interest before I came here but I'm really happy here, my family's really happy, so I'm having a great time."

Last week Newcastle learned they would be able to sign players on loan from sides also controlled by their Saudi owners in January, after a vote by Premier League clubs on a temporary ban on related-party loans did not receive the required support.

Neves could have helped the Magpies fill the midfield gap created by Sandro Tonali's 10-month ban for breaching betting rules - manager Eddie Howe has admitted he is an admirer of the midfielder.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Neves.

But Neves - who helped his side beat Riyadh rivals Al-Nassr 3-0 on Friday - said: "Everything is going really well for me and I want to stay here."

In March this year, the Italian Prime Minister visited India for the first time and praised PM Modi, calling him the most loved one of all the leaders around the world.
